South Dakota: Brain Injury Types
A coup-contrecoup brain injury occurs when two contusions are present, one on the side of the brain affected by the trauma, as well as one on the opposite side. These occur after car accidents, falls, assault or child abuse, where the force was so strong it caused a contusion on the opposite side of the brain. The coup injury occurs when the head is suddenly stopped and the brain rushes forward. The contrecoup injury then occurs when the brain bounces off the primary surface and bruises the opposing end of the skull.
