South Dakota: Brain Injury Types

Brain Injury Lawyers

A skull fracture occurs when there is a break in the bone surrounding the brain. Skull fractures can cause bleeding in the brain because of injuries to the arteries and veins. These injuries may occur after car accidents, falls, assault or head trauma. Symptoms of this South Dakota traumatic brain injury can include:

  • Pain
  • Fluid leaking from the ears or nose
  • Bruises behind the ears or around the eyes
  • Changes in pupils
  • Blood flowing out of the ear

There are five types of skull fractures, compromising of simple, compound, linear, depressed and basilar. A simple skull fracture occurs when there is a break in the bone but no damage to the skin, while a compound skull fracture causes a break in the skin and splintering in the bone. A linear skull fracture is a break in the cranial bone in a straight line, without depressing, splintering or distortion. This type of fracture is not a serious injury, though in rare cases may cause brain swelling which can lead to dangerous complications. Depressed skull fractures cause a break in the cranial bone where the bone depresses towards the brain. These often occur after an impact with heavy, but small objects such as hammers or rocks. Large depressions may require surgery to lift the bone and ensure the brain was not damaged. Basilar skull fractures occur when the bones that form the base of the skull are broken.
