When a person enters a hospital for a traumatic brain injury in South Dakota, the doctor may administer several tests to grasp the extent and type of injury. A traumatic brain injury victim may receive a Magentic Resonance Imaging (MRI), which is a scan that allows a doctor to view brain damage as small as 1 to 2mm. A cat scan may also be used. While a cat scan cannot see as much detail as an MRI, it can detect blood or fluid that may have collected around the brain. An electroencephalogram (EEG) test monitors the electrical activity in the brain. An angiogram can also be used to examine the blood vessels in the brain. An ICP monitor measures the intracranial pressure (ICP) which is highly important because increase in pressure in the brain can result in more brain damage.
